160 Micron vs 90 Micron — When the Extra Thickness Matters
The standard E-Vac roll at 90 micron handles the vast majority of everyday vacuum sealing tasks. ES-Vac is the heavy duty 160-micron roll for sharp edges, bone-in products, industrial items, and long-term storage where film integrity matters.
Standard E-Vac
Handles everyday vacuum sealing tasks such as meat portions, fish fillets, vegetables, batch cooking, and sous vide. For most buyers, the E-Vac is the right roll and costs less per metre.
Extra Strong ES-Vac
Built for products where the standard film's puncture resistance is not enough, including sharp edges, exposed bones, hard shell edges, hardware, medical items, and extended storage.
Products with Sharp Edges
Exposed bone, fish with sharp fins, game with bone fragments or shot, shellfish with hard shell edges, and hard-rind cheeses with sharp corners can create pressure points against the bag wall. At 160 micron, ES-Vac resists those pressure points cleanly.
Industrial and Non-Food Items
Screws, bolts, metal components, hardware with sharp threads, engineering components with machined edges, and medical items with protruding elements all suit the 160-micron film. ES-Vac is food-safe but not limited to food.
Long-Term Storage
For anything stored for 12 months or more, the thicker film provides a more durable oxygen barrier and a bag that is less susceptible to micro-abrasion against freezer surfaces or other stored items.
When Standard E-Vac Still Makes Sense
If neither sharp edges nor extended storage applies to your product, the standard E-Vac roll is the right choice and costs less per metre. All LAVA vacuum packaging machines seal 160-micron foil. For non-LAVA machines, check the maximum foil thickness specification before ordering.
Which Width for Which Product
The ES-Vac roll is available in four standard widths: 15cm, 20cm, 25cm, and 30cm. Width selection follows the same logic as the standard E-Vac rolls — choose the width closest to the widest point of your product without being narrower than it.
Slim Heavy Duty Packs
Sausages with bone, slim bone-in portions, and hardware components up to 12cm wide.
Standard Bone-In Portions

Three Steps — Cut, Seal One End, Load, Seal the Other
Cut the Roll
Cut the roll to your required bag length based on the product you are packing.
Seal One End
Place one open end across your machine's seal bar and run a weld-only cycle to close the bottom.
Load the Product
Place the food, hardware, medical item, or component inside the newly formed bag.
Vacuum and Seal
Run a normal vacuum-and-seal cycle on the open top end to complete the pack.
Sealing Time Note
The 160-micron thickness requires the same sealing time settings as the RS-Vac pre-made bags. On most LAVA vacuum sealers, the sealing time dial may need to be set slightly higher than for the 90-micron E-Vac to ensure a complete weld through the thicker film. Refer to your machine's manual for the recommended sealing time setting for 160-micron foil.
