Gusseted and Metallised — Two Things No Flat Bag Offers

The Gusseted Format

Every other bag in the LAVA range is flat — designed to compress around the product during vacuum sealing. The K-Vac is gusseted: it has folded panels on each side that expand outward as the bag is filled, giving it a three-dimensional, box-like shape.

This is the standard format used for premium coffee, loose leaf tea, spices, ground herbs, rice, nuts, and any dry product sold in a stand-up pouch that holds its shape on a shelf.

For products with bulk and volume — a 500g bag of whole coffee beans, a large pack of mixed spices, loose leaf tea — a flat bag compresses the contents and can cause breakage or clumping. The gusseted format accommodates the product's natural volume without compression. Once sealed, the bag stands upright on a shelf or in a cupboard.

The Metallised Barrier

Standard transparent vacuum bags let light through. For coffee, tea, spices, and other aromatic products, light exposure accelerates the breakdown of volatile compounds — the aromatic oils that give coffee its flavour, the essential oils in dried herbs.

A metallised barrier blocks both UV and visible light entirely, preventing light-induced degradation of the product.

The same metallised layer is an oxygen barrier that outperforms standard PA/PE film. Combined with vacuum sealing, the K-Vac removes air and then provides a multilayer barrier against oxygen re-entry through the film itself.

Swiss-Made Patented Multilayer Construction

For any product where freshness, aroma, and shelf-life are the primary concerns rather than freezer performance, the metallised format is the right choice.

The PET/metallised PET/PE layered construction is patented and produced in Switzerland. At 102µ for the 250ml size and 124µ for the 500ml, 1000ml, and 2000ml sizes, the foil is strong enough to handle the weight of filled bags through the sealing cycle and subsequent handling.

Chamber Machine Compatibility

The K-Vac, like the I-Vac, works with both external vacuum sealers and chamber vacuum packers. Commercial coffee roasters and food businesses that run chamber machines for other packaging can run the K-Vac on the same equipment without a separate sealing station.

Not all machines can seal metallised composite foil. All LAVA vacuum sealer machines handle the K-Vac without modification. For non-LAVA machines, check your machine's compatibility with aluminium composite or metallised foil before ordering.

Best For

Whole bean and ground coffee, loose leaf and bagged tea, dried herbs and spice blends, rice and grains, nuts and dried fruit, protein and supplement powders, and any aromatic dry product where light protection and aroma retention are the primary storage requirements.

K-Vac Gusseted Metallised Bags — Common Questions

What is the difference between the K-Vac and the I-Vac bags?

Both are metallised multilayer bags that work with external sealers and chamber machines. The I-Vac is specifically engineered for electronic component protection — it meets ESD, EMI shielding, and MIL-spec standards for electrostatic discharge and moisture barrier performance. The K-Vac is a food-grade product optimised for aroma retention and light protection in dry goods. Different material compositions, different certifications, different applications.
The R-Vac is a flat, clear, embossed PA/PE bag for food products where visibility and freezer performance are the priority. The K-Vac is a gusseted, metallised PET/PE bag for aromatic and light-sensitive dry goods where the product needs to hold its volume, block light, and retain aroma over an extended shelf life. The two products serve different packaging functions entirely.
All LAVA vacuum packaging machines seal the K-Vac correctly. The open side of the bag sits across the sealing bar in the same way as a flat bag — the gusseted body folds flat enough to position across the sealing strip. For non-LAVA machines, confirm compatibility with metallised composite foil. The sealing bar needs to reach sufficient temperature to weld through the PET/PE composite material cleanly.
Yes. The K-Vac is one of two bags in the LAVA range (alongside the I-Vac) that is compatible with chamber vacuum packers, not just external sealers.
Yes. The metallised barrier runs through the film construction, making the bag fully opaque on both sides — you cannot see the contents through the bag from the outside. For products sold at retail or stored where visual identification matters, consider printing or labelling the bags after sealing.
